Coolant Temperature Sensor

Check engine light came on, Autozone diagnosed it as failing Coolant Temperature Sensor, will I be ok to drive roughly 20 miles to work tomorrow before I replace this or will I be flirting with disaster?

Has your car every overheated or run hot? If not you'll be OK to drive it.
 
^ WHat he said. If your coolant is full, no worries. If anything, the pcm may pull timing as a precaution and she may not have as much oomph. Did you pull the connector and reseat it?
 
No its never overheated, plus theres fresh coolant in there as well. I did reset it and the light came back on. Thanks for the info.
 
I should check right now but I'm lazy, If there's a sensor on the tank move it around and try to make it tight. Had the same problem on my svt contour
 
the sensor is located on the crossover pipe near the alt, but you have 2 sensors the driver side 1 is to the gauge in the dash cluster and the passnger side 1, thats the one the dealer says is the cyclinder head temp sensor is what the PCM reads to work your cooling fan so becareful on which of the sensor has failed! if the temp gauge gives a reading on the dash then the 1 on the left side is still good and right side that the PCM reads from has failed and your fan might not come on while driving!
 
Just called three different ford dealer parts desks and they all told me the same thing for the placement of the sensors.

Driver side gets the switch sensor (for pcm/fan):
Motorcraft part number: SW-1574

Passenger side gets the temperature gauge sensor:
Motorcraft part number: DY-1145

Dealers are infamous for having wrong info, especially about the Marauder. Unfortunately, the factory service manual does not make a distinction between the two, and only peripherally mentions that there even ARE two for the MM. Maybe someone can go out to theirs and unplug the passenger side to confirm that this is indeed the gauge sensor.
 
The one works the gauge probably won't throw a code that Autozone could read. I don't think the gauge temp sender is monitored by the PCM.
 
I just had a temp sensor go bad. It actuly was reading opposit. When the truck warmed up the sensor read cold. So the PCM made ajustments for cold running. Truck ran bad, and would not restart once warmed up. There are 2 sensors on this truck 1 for PCM and 1 for the gauge. The truck was a 2000 ranger 3.0L.
 
Just got confirmation from the gentleman who bought my brand new coolant crossover tube.

Driver side sensor part number:
F77F-10884-AB (SW-5174)

Passenger side sensor part number:
F5AF-12A648-AB (DY-1144)

(I was wrong in my post earlier today regarding the passenger side sensor part number.)
