Drivers Window Motor/Regulator Replacement

I searched and found nothing... except rear window molding replacement.

Ok... on my trip home I closed my window and I heard wind... like a break in the seal. I look at my window and it closed but it looks like it might be off track or something.

I think it might need a new regulator. I haven't taken it apart yet.

Anyone have some instructions? Price on parts? Could it just wiggled out of alignment and alls I have to do it reset it and tighten it back down?

Regulators are a pain in the arse.

They are riveted in. HAve to drill the rivets out of the door skin as well as the glass. I used bolts to replace the rivets.

You'll need a punch and drill, or a grinder and a socket set and a new regulator.

Remove the door panel, unplug the connections for the switches and put it out of the way.

Help push the glass down with the motor so you can see where the glass mounts. Use a grinder or punch and drill to remove the rivet. Next, remove the bolt that holds the felt glass channel and work the glass out of the door, and put it somewhere out of the way safe.

Next, you'll want to locate the rivets for the window regulator and motor. IIRC there are 2 10 or 11 mm nuts that hold the top part of the regulator on, and rivets elsewhere (for the motor and regulator) Pop them all out.

Remove the motor from the old regulator, and install on the new one. Install the regulator/motor assy back into the door mount the bolts and replace the riveted areas with new rivets or nuts and bolts with lockwashers. Plug the connector in for the motor, and work the glass bakc into the door, lining it up with where the new window regulator slide is.


Make sure you have the washers and nylon clamps in the right order, and then install new rivets or bolts.

Replace the bolt that holds the felt stripping back in place, but dont tighten it until the window has rolled up and down without binding or sticking.

Roll the window up and down, making sure there is no binding.

Replace door panel.

Damn... I was hoping it was going to be easy like a new F150. Crap... ohh well. I can do it... I have plenty of tools and such. I just wanted to see if there were any tricks.

back when mine went...

Well sad to say common problem back when mine went out ,it was easy.
drove to the dealer and it was fixed when i picked it up 3 days later.
UNDER Warranty. WHEW

What he said and I have some other tips.

Be extra carefull removing the door panel. (broken panels will rattle)
Have an assistant available for holding the window up when re-installing the unit. (easier than braces or supports)

A word of caution here. If you use bolts instead of rivets to secure the window to the regulator be sure and use nylock nuts on the bolts so that you only have to snug them up. DO NOT OVER TIGHTEN THE BOLTS ON THE WINDOW or you will be buying a new one. I strongly suggest using rivets to secure the window. I have seen more that one tech shatter the glass.
 
I pulled it apart... everything looked normal and the window has been functioning properly. Now i have my mental roadmap of the job. Doesn't look bad at all.

I have a big rivet gun... I will reuse rivets since I have a **** load of them that I will never use elsewhere.

I've got to say, after I got finished ranting about the idiot @ Ford who decided to use rivets, and got down to actually doing the job, you are right....piece of cake. Took a couple of hours, max.
 
Do you have to take the glass out to replace e rear window regulator? It looks like the window is blocking it coming out. If it has to come out how hard is it to manage?
 
I've replaced at least 100 (probably more) window regulators on customers and MY personal vehicles.

My method.

NEVER NEVER NEVER... one more time... NEVER use rivets to attach the windows to the regulator. Just a little bit of extra pressure and you'll be buying a new glass. The rivets used are 1/4 and take a special tool to install.

To remove the existing rivets:
  1. Punch out the center shaft / mandrel head of each rivet.
  2. There are typically 3 "ears" on the back of the rivet, use either needle nose or diagonal pliers to bend them back and forth until they snap off.
  3. You can now pull the rivet out by working your diagonal pliers under the head and twisting to remove it.

If you drill or grind the rivets to remove it you take the chance of slipping and breaking the glass.

Reinstalling the regulator / window:
Use 1/4-20 bolts, Nyloc nuts and thread locker. I use them only all the attaching points. You can tighten the regulator to door bolts as tight as you want but only tighten the regulator to window bolts enough so the window is not loose. Too tight and you'll be looking for a new window.

Remember to remove any debris from inside the door before you put the panel on.

I'd also recommend replacing the regulator and motor as a unit. Not that much more expensive and you'll save yourself a big headache... just ask Dom.

I have a new OEM switch panel coming today because my driver's window is inop.
I have a feeling that it is the motor, but got the switch anyway because the one I had was a Chinese knockoff and the express down didn't always work right.

After a 2 minute search, I found this video on youtube showing how to change out JUST the motor, not the regulator, which I have no interest in doing or paying for.
