Gas tank replaced

So I couldn't get this car started so I decided to drop the tank. Well the tank was a little over half full and the ethanol gas really did a number to it.





New tank and sending unit arrived. Tank was already painted silver too.

 
Wow it really did a number on it. Where did you get the tank from? Sta-bil makes a new product for tank protection called 360 Performance. I'm not sure how well it works but after seeing these pics I'm inclined to try it.
 
Next time you get a tank that looks like that, I can tell you how to easily clean the inside like brand new for about two bucks. Only, coat it with a very good quality epoxy or it will happen again.

Did I mention I hate deathonal. I won't run that crap even in my ex-mother-in-law's lawn mower. Let's all choke the corn lobbyists.
 
What percentage ethanol? Around here everyone gets 10% blend whether we like it or not. No one has that issue that I am aware of.
 
I'm starting to see down here ethanol-free gas, but you will pay extra for it. On one pump you have from left to right: diesel/ethanol-free then on the right 87/89/93.

10% ethanol is the only fuel my car has ever seen and the inside of my tank is cleaner than the outside of your new one!

I have done a lot of pumps for local guys and never once seen anything like that. You should be looking into the gas your buying or a bad gas cap letting moisture in.

It looks like that gas tank did 20 years hard labor with no time off for good behavior!
 
It would take way too long to explain all the negatives such as a few: burn rate, fuel system crystallization, moisture attraction, scored cylinder walls, etc.. Let's just say engines are most happiest without it. For the record, the ONLY gas treatment that will break down completely the fuel system crystals caused by ethanol is Techron. This is free advice with no money back guarantee.

I've tried to explain it in detail to some car loving folks who always come back with the same reply: "I burn too much of it too quickly through my gas tank to make a difference." I have no response for that. That's like saying a little bit of chlorine in my drinking water won't hurt me if I drink a lot more.

Many of the stations around here that are claiming to have deathanol free gas are charging a huge premium for fuel that isn't ethanol free. I've tested all the stations within 50 miles and found only one that was really ethanol free. My wife's new car has had only this fuel in it from new, runs like a top and gets 5-6 mpg better than everyone else is reporting on their similar car. I bring the fuel home in multple 6 gal gas cans to put in the other machines. A pain, but worth every bit.
 
I wasn't discussing the negatives, just his situation which is clearly a water/moisture issue. Yes ethanol could contain three tea spoons of water per gallon depending on temperature. We get that. I was stating the fact that I have never seen a tank less than fifteen years old with any sediment in these parts where ethanol has been our only choice of gas for many years.

He clearly has other contributing issues.

Car sat for over 6 years outside with this much gas in it. Maybe that'll explain it but i'm not 100% sure. It's just what I found when I took tank down.
 
That tanks looks like the 10 gal tank on a 1950 8n Ford project I bought several years ago before I discovered the electrolysis method. I sure don't miss the week long, violent shaking of the gas tank with nuts, bolts and screws to knock the rust out. Try that with a 20 gal tank and it will flat wear you out. :eek:

That's what had thought, the car must of been sitting for a long time with the same fuel in it.

My 89 Mustang has been parked since 2007 with the same fuel in it and I had already figured on replacing the fuel pump and tank since something similar could happen. I did add some fuel stabilizer shortly after it was parked and it's been ran twice, thankfully the replacement of the parts will be cheap and the vehicle is old enough that it couldn't hurt to replace the stuff anyways.

Exactly. Had to replace battery cable too. Dam positive post rotted away. Next biggest battle is the load leveler. Hoping it's just the pump but further investigation will figure that out.
