Cleaning Fuel filler compartment

My fuel filler compartment apparently has been over looked when I clean the car for a very long time.

There is a build up of black crud.

Anyone have a product to remove it and a technique.

I tried a spray bottle of carwash/water and a tooth brush.

There must be a better way.

Step 1:
Spray Gunk foam engine degreaser.

Step 2:
Use a shop vac to vacuum the crud out as you scrub clean with the toothbrush.

Step 3:
Repeat 1-2 as needed until the crud is gone.

Step 4:
Wipe clean with a lint free cloth.

Thank you.

Lots of good suggestions.

I have a lot of WD40, not too many Atlas Missles, so I will give it a try.

Another Hint

Typically happens when a M/M owner has way too much money and tries to over-fill the tank. My filler neck is 14 yrs old and stays spotless.
