Dealer Oil Change Question

I might be paranoid, but the Ford dealer where I get my oil changed told me they use oil out of a bulk tank, not the plastic quart or gallon containers. Should I be concerned that I am actually getting the semi-synthetic, proper weight oil? Is there any way to check? Reason I ask is that I checked the oil between changes yesterday and it seemed thick to me, which got me thinking.

Well I use Mobil 1 0-20, but I would not be concerned if you are getting the oil changes done at the dealer and there is a oil related problem... THEY should fix it ,IMHO :beer: :beer: :beer:

nj: Just because you're paranoid doesn't mean they're NOT out to get you!

Seriously, yes...I would be concerned...some dealers have been known to use just one bulk oil for everything they service, and chances are it's not 5W-20...if it's 5W-30 synthetic (doubtful) then you'd still be OK, but if it's 5W-30 dino, or 10W-anything, I'd get it out of my crankcase ASAP...

Joe: you're absolutely right...they SHOULD fix it...the problem is that oil-related failures generally don't show up during the warranty period...but they WILL show up much later, when it's already WAY too late...

Joe: you're absolutely right...they SHOULD fix it...the problem is that oil-related failures generally don't show up during the warranty period...but they WILL show up much later, when it's already WAY too late...

I'm with RF on this one: Get that stuff outta there ...quick. There's no way they have a drum full of the correct oil for a Marauder. How many Marauders do they service at your dealership? My dealer sold exactly ...one, and Barb's dealer never sold any. Mercury has two vehicles with these oil service requirements; Marauders, and Aviators. Barb gets free oil changes on her Aviator, and we take our own jugs of Amsoil 5W-30 100% Synthetic and an Amsoil Filter, which they gladly use.

PS: That kid ain't getting anywhere near my Marauder. :D
 
We have 5w20 in bulk. We keep qts. of the other weights in stock for the cars that require something different than 5w20. Our tank says Motorcraft 5w20 right on it.
 
I've worked for a Ford Service dept for over 9 years. I've had my oil changed there for about that long. I trust what they get in.

Just my .02 and then some.
 
I've never worked at a dealer, and I always change my own oil, but in reference to your question, I agree with "the Dealer" and w/"ROYLPITA" on this. And BTW, I didn't think that Marauders are the only cars that require 5W20 oil anyway. What about the 4.6L engines in Cobras and in Mustangs? Doesn't Ford also call out for the same oil in them? And what about the 4.6L in Crown Victoria's, and Mercury Grand Marquis? The point is, that I'm sure that your Ford/Mercury dealer has the 5W20 oil that your Marauder needs.
 
About 90% of todays Ford products use 5w20. That's why we switched our bulk oil tank from 5w30 to 5w20 a few years ago. Our techs look at the stick on the vehicle to see what oil is required, or we have a chart in our parts dept that list all the vehicles. He installs the correct oil. Believe me.

I worked in dealerships for 12 years. I got to know our oil delivery driver, Mike, who is still a friend of mine. He told me a long time ago every dealership gets the same bulk motor oil [in the correct weight, of course]. If you want to be sure of what you're getting, use bottled motor oil.

Perhaps it's my bad, but isn't the service requirement for the DOHC (Merauder & Aviator) Synthetic? It was in my Cobra, and I thought it to be the case with the MM, Barb's Aviator, and all the DOHC engines. Honestly I never checked, we just lug the jugs of Amsoil along.
I'm sure the stuff in the barrel's not synthetic.:confused:
 
Ford Motorcraft only has one 5w20 motor oil and it states it's a Synthetic Blend. I checked our chart and the Marauder states the same 5w20 as the rest of the line.
 
All the same...

If you check the service bulletins...Ford recommends
5w-20 blend for all 4.6L engines built since 1992.

Didn't know that, and hope you didn't mind my taking up your time on a busy Wednesday afternoon with these incessant questions. Now, it's back to work, for you, ...um after you answer the one about the milage in the other thread. :D

I DO believe you, Ray... :)

My comments were tainted by my negative experiences in the past, and not just with Ford dealers. I realise that there are a great number of competent, reliable and honest dealers out there...the problem is, there are just as many who aren't...I guess I should not have assumed the worst...and I absolutely didn't mean my comments towards you, or the dealers Carfixer, RoyL, and the other Ford employees on the board work for...
