Fuel Capacity

The owners manual says the tank is 19 gallons. Is that with the reserve? If not, what is the reserve? My low fuel light went on tonight and I wasnt sure what kind of range I had left.

Yep - I've had the warning light on many a time but never crammed more than 15-16 gallons or so in the tank afterward.

2 gallons

When the red indicator is tangent to the E there are exactly two gallons left in the tank, I have verified this twice on my trips to Santa Barbara. I got 22.7 mpg once and 23.5 once, some will say thats low but I down shift into 3rd alot to assist in slowing down.

I got over 17 gallons in when my indicator was above the "E". Past experience on all my other cars is that this gauge is not all that accurate. Sounds like you've got yours figured out though.

Seems to me Ford must have a corporate policy that goes back to the sixties at least on this fuel guage thing. Every FMC product I've ever driven or had anyone comment about this topic says the same thing, when it says empty, it's not. Guess they all run their watches five minutes fast too.

And at least when I last drove a GM back in the 80's it was, "Better gas up before it hits empty. Empty means empty."

I ran through a few tanks on my last trip . The warning light seemed to come on when I had about 3 Gallons left.

almost ran out

I know I have put 19.3 gallons in MM, but I hope I never let it get that low again.Yesterday I put over 18 gal in, noticed my best mileage 370 on the tripset. this is far better than the first 4000mi got me . Usually 260-290 is what I noticed prior to my last fill-up per tank.Thats drivin er hard too!!

Filled up my truck once in a tiny rural gas station and got 2 gallons more than my tank capacity. Hmmm...I guess that's one way to make the station more profitable. Kind of like the incredible shrinking taco supreme at Taco Bell.

The tank is rated for 19 gallons. You can probably cram more in and take up the air space or pump it into the filler neck. When the gauge reads "E" there is still two gallons left to help cool the electric pump. I certainly wouldn't let it get this far as you'll be not only pumping the dregs of the tank, but also you could cause lean conditions under accelleration as the fuel runs to the back of the tank and out of the pump basket.....

20 gallon gas tank

Does anybody know if you can take
a 20 gallon gas tank off a
1997 Grand Marquis on put it
on a Marauder? Would it fit?

Gotta Love It!

"Like, when it's, like, really low... it'll blink or something, right?"

That's a real quote from a real person.

Would an extra gallon make that big of a difference?

As far as the fuel guage goes, it's pessimistic deliberately. As mentioned, the fuel pump is submerged inside the tank itself in the gasoline. It actually relies on the gasoline to help keep it cool, and running too low all the time may shorten the life of the pump. I would honestly rather have a guage that reads empty before it's empty, rather than a guage that was dead on. At least with a pessimistic guage, you know that you have a little reserve left to get your butt to the gas station.

A few extra miles don't hurt....

Yes, a 20 gallon tank is better
than 19, especially when you get
caught in traffic these days.
I think they made the tank
smaller to cut back on weight?
or cost.

Gotta Love It! :uzi:

IMO it wouldn't be worth the effort for an additional gallon of gas. (if it did fit)

How about these! The huge racks with sections for gas containers on the roof!

I don't know about a 20 gal tank in the 97 GM... My 95 GM w/HP has a 19 gal tank in it. I think they have always had a 19 gal tank in them. I don't think there was ever a factory option for something bigger. IMHO.
Cheers

check again....

I am pretty sure that all
1995-96-97 Grand Marquis
had 20 gallon tanks.
Take another look at your
owners manual.
Either in '98 or '99 they went
to the 19 gallon.

My 1994 Lincoln Town Car
also has a 20 gallon tank.

Gotta Love It! :bounce:
