Has anyone upgraded their H1 fog light bulbs?

Thanks Todd and Fordnut!

I wonder if those Sylvania bulbs are brighter? On some it just said 'longer life' hmmm....

Tom
I don't know for a fact on all of them, Tom. But my GUESS would be they would ALL be an improvement over what is used on the Ford production line.

cornering lamps

I put in Silverstar 9007 headlights, Silverstar H1 fogs, and Silverstar 3157 turn signal/markers. The 3157s have a bluish purple color whtn they're off but are orange when they're on. I also put in Xenon 3156 cornering lamps. They are the blue color bulbs and the light is bluish in color. Didn't see any way to adjust the angle of light coming out of them. A note, I also tried the 50W halogen 3156 bulbs and they were brighter than the OEM bulbs but they still put out a yellowish colored light when compared to the Silverstars. So I put them in the backup lights.

I installed the 50W halogen backup bulbs and they were brighter than the original 27W cornering lamps and also installed them in the backup lamps. since the cornering lamps only light up when useing the turn signals at night I left them in until something new comes up...50W halogen 3156 bulbs

Know why fog lights are amber instead of white? Amber light penetrates fog better. the white color light reflects back in your eyes. HID lights are awful in rain, fog and humid conditions.

I was thinking of keeping the fog lights because their color is a bit yellower than the Silver Stars. Yellow does pierce through bad weather better. But i'll have to see since I don't wanna drive my Marauder in the rain or snow....lol.

DON'T confuse color with brightness. it is an illusion. anytime you put a tint on a bulb, you reduce the brightness. white color bulbs (silverstars) have a blueish tint on them.

In all honesty, the silver stars really aren't brighter than the stock bulbs...they're about the same brightness but they're whiter. They don't have a blueish tint.

Im sure what is being said about the color of fog lights have merit but I have silverstar lamps in place for the oem fog lamps and with the fog in the morning up here I have no problem seeing ahead of me...

I just removed the shade from the fog lights this afternoon and installed the Silverstars in the headlamps.

You need to remove the plastic cover under the bumper (4 8mm screws) the fog lite wires will be attached to it so just push it out of the way. Unplug the connector and remove the bulb and set it aside without touching it.

At the bottom of the foglamp assembly is a gold colored thumscrew that adjusts the height of the beam. turn the screw clockwise in until it hits the stops while counting the turns (only 1) then unthread all the way out. The only thing now holding the back of the lamp to the lens are the 2 "pivot points" on each side.

Gently lift this plastic pivot point with your fingers enough to slide the reflector side of the lamp assembly out and away from the lens side still attached to the bumber.

The shade is a metal ring that surrouds the bulb, pull straight out away from the reflector (only held in by light pressure)

Reassemble everything and turn the adjustment screw all the way in and back out 1 turn (on my car anyway)

noticably brighter....about 15min for each side.

Excellent instructions on removing the shade. When it starts to warm up, Im getting busy...

As to the comments above on "foglights"...I consider what we have more of a "driving light(s)" than "foglights". There is a considerable difference in the functionality of both. It is true that "foglights" generally have a yellow color to penetrate the fog and they are usually mounted higher on the front of a car (i.e. the '05 GT Mustang) I think it's a matter of semantics in this discussion.Feel free to correct me if you disagree.

Well followed the instruction and removed the shade and the light out and spread on the road has much improved . although a slight change to the previous instructions , instead of turning the brass screw clockwise , turn it Counterclockwise as to remove it , then the rest of the instructions fall right into place... :D

I get to ask for help for a change these H1 fog lamps dont they require to cut the OEM plug, if this is the case is there no direct replacement fog light that does not require cutting or modifiying the wires

The Sylvania SilverStar H1 fogs are a direct replacement Dennis. I highly recommend them.

For a complete list of Sylvania compatibility see the Bulb Sizes thread.

Taff they just sent a set out here they had a single blade terminal what is the corect part #
The H1 has a single blade terminal. Twist apart the connector on the back of the light assembly and pull the old bulb out of the blade connector, then re-install the new bulb and re-assemble.

Dennis,
That is the correct bulb - H1. The blade plugs into the twist lock conector that comes out of the lens housing. Remove the bulb from the conector by pulling it straight out and push the new one in. It took me awhile to figure this out - the bulb looks like it is a part of the twist lock plug.

EDIT:
Sorry FN - one should always read to the end of the thread before posting!

Heavy351...

Why did you have the need to do this ?
The plastic cover under my bumper has a section that is held in with VELCRO
that removes very easily to give you access to the fog lamps.
