Marauder rattling at cold start up. Please help me diagnose.

After doing some research on this site it sounds like a common problem. I am hoping it is the starter. Sounds to me like it is coming from underneath the car. Almost like there is something in the exhaust clearing out.

Still, any comments are appreciated.

I have the same problem. Only with my car, it only happens randomly when it's cold out. For the first week straight of colder weather it would make the noise. The last few weeks it's been random days it will make it.

What I've been able to gather is it could be any of these: the timing chain tensioners that are worn, oil draining down in the motor, or nothing to worry about. My Marauder has made the noise off and on for almost 3 years.

Doesn't sound like chains and guides

That's one hellofanoise! Have you crawled under it and had someone start it to get a better idea where that noise source is?

On my car, I thought it was the starter so I replaced it a year ago with a oem starter. It still makes the noise.

I've been under the car for two cold starts. On mine it's from the front of the engine.

Not yet. Has seemed to have gotten worse in the last few months. Will have the wife start her up and see If I can figure it out.

Thanks.

Mine made that noise as well only when cold, at first startup of the day.

I determined it was the teeth of the starter hitting the flywheel as it disengaged.

I replaced the original started with a new one it did the same thing again. I pulled that starter out brought it back, got another and it's been fine ever since.

I'm mystified why people post videos of noises without trying to diagnose them first.
Step 1: Put car up on ramps
Step 2: Get under car
Step 3: Have a helper start the engine so you can isolate the noise.
Step 4: Find noise

Starter.

My black does that, exact sound, get your head down near the battery and you can clearly hear it.

It is a small piece of magnet that broke off inside the starter.

I opened mine up, removed the piece that broke off, and reinstalled. I got another five years out of it.

Here's a video I made seven years ago..

Very glad to see the discussion in this thread. My aviator has a similar noise that the shop diagnosed as bad timing chain guides/tensioners.

The aviator makes a bit more noise and clanking but it very well could be this.

Will put it up on ramps to see if I can isolate the noise around the starter. Hopefully it's the starter bc I didn't like the quote to replace tensioners...

I had that same noise on my car on cold startup, it was the starter that was the problem.
Yes, no doubt about it...that noise is the starter Bendix. I see that pretty often with 4.6 starters at work, and you will have to replace the starter to get rid of the noise. It could last for years like that..my Marauder did that a couple years ago, and I had to change the starter. I can't stand noises :shake:

Mine did it when i was low on oil. Had it charged and filled(obviously) and it only did it a couple times, I guess until the oil had a chance to fully circulate. That was a few months ago. Just started again last week... Haven't checked my oil yet, but I know these damn engines suck and burn oil

I'm not doubting you, but why is it only on cold starts in cold weather?

Mine was pretty much at all times.

Or remove the chipped off piece like I said. The noise is the piece bouncing around inside. Once removed, it is as quiet as new.

It takes less than ten minutes to do and in my case the starter still looked great besides the 1/4" or less corner piece that came off.
