Mac, tell us about the usefulness of "window etching", which as you know can be in the form of the VIN, or a 'special' theft Insurance policy number.
I know a few Insurance companies give a discount for VIN etching, even though all cars have a VIN tag and the VIN also in about 18 other places.

The more ways to ID your vehicle the better chance of recovery if stolen.
The NYPD will do this as a community service at no charge and will issue a letter of documentation for your ins co.
RCSignals said:I can see the idea behind VIN etching, I don't think it'd stop a thief but might deter some, and an insurance discount is always good.
Does anyone see any value to the 'theft insurance' etching, which is just a policy number? To me it seems more like another borderline insurance scam.

Time to install the secondary cut off...:shake:Limited-production vehicles like the Mercury Marauder — which was made for only two years — also are targets.
