Just thought i post my markings after getting an early start this morning...This was done from a left turn out of the driveway stoppin the car and then punching it..Thought i would post it for the heck of it...

From what I was told, drifting is like driving a sprint car. The difference is that it is with a souped up rear driver with street tires at speeds of 120mph in both directions. Lately, car commercials (like the ones that show the "Beavis & Butthead" warning: "Professional driver on closed course. Do not attempt") show a vehicle powersliding sideways. Most of those cars are front drivers; with the exception of the new GT.

So then "drifting" is nothing more than a long skid, or a 180 degree bootleg turn? If that's the case, then none of that is of any interest to me. It isn't the same as a burnout if I'm reading this whole thing right. If not, then please correct me, but assuming I'm reading you guys right on this one, I'll also add that a skid of any kind merely displayes a deliberate lock-up of the brakes rather than some torque from the engine.

Billy, if you want a nice example of drifting click here:

As the Ford GT takes the first turn he powers into it hard and slides around the turn......that is drifting. The car "sport" if you will of drifting is a lot more of just that...........it has nothing to do with breaking, that's what makes it fun.

I'm very familiar w/every single video clip that there is of the 2005 Ford GT since that's my ultimate dream car!!! And so I already had that video on my PC. But that's merely waht is called a "Powerslide" where the driver breaks the back tires loose while powering in to a corner. So were did this "drifting" term come into play? If it was popularized by the Jap car makers, or Jap car owners, then I sure don't intend in following their lead by calling what the Ford GT is doing in that video "drifting". It's "powersliding". That's all.

Like everything else, the damn kids saw what daddy did and made it better, cough, ok different, lol. And don't give me that dream car garbage, cause you have to have close to what it'd cost for one of those into your car by now, lol.

Oh btw, looking to do a dyno tune in Manchester the 19 or 26th any interest Billy?

FWD = Drifting since you need to break the rear loose and cause it to drift.
RWD = POWERSLIDE sice all you need to do to keep it going is to feed the gas...

Often, the cars are so low in drifting, that while the scream around a corner, the front wheels (angled in or out) are buzzing off the material of the wheel well in the very top center...and it looks like a nitrous purge!

Well if I remember correctly from when NASCAR was running big blocks, in funny looking production cars with big wings on the back, drifting was taking a turn so fast that the entire car would drift around the turn in a controlled angle. The idea was that the car was moving to fast for taking the turn on rails and all four tires were in a slide.

You could start on the inside of the turn and wind up at the outside.

I'm pretty sure that's when I first heard of drifting.

^^ my understanding exactly ^^

I believe that a "drift" is when all four tires are in a slide or skid. If it's a FWD car and they're only sliding the rear around, I don't consider it a drift. ALL FOUR.

On a side note, here's my opinion on things: No matter how hard anyone tries to justify this as some kind of racing style, I disagree. It's showmanship and somewhat of an art. It has no place in "racing". Any time a tire (any tire) is put in to a skid or slide, it is out of control. When a car is in a drift, it is out of control. When I do a burnout, the rear tires are out of my control. Get it?

Now, some of you may argue that I am in control because I'm throttling and braking and keeping the car in a designated line while drifting or doing the burnout. WRONG. I'm talking about being in direct control of the vehicle's traction at any given moment. Take this example: *You're in the midst of a great drift and an object suddenly is encountered in your path.* You cannot put any input into that vehicle that will effectively release you from the drift and plant the tires in a sufficient amount of time to avoid the collision. That is out of control. Not wild. But out of your control.

Now that I have ranted about my hatred of the drifting "sport", please feel free to flame the heck out of me. I'm just really set in my ways from all of my pursuit training and Emergency Vehicle Operations schools. No matter what, I always remember that saying - "a skid / slide is being out of control".

Well, to your point Constable, there are quite a few athletes that believe true sports don't include any use or misuse of a vehicle, be it racing or driving.

So when you come down to it, it's all about who will pay to come see it, lol.

2 things:

#1. I know you were joking, but I have 40K into my car including the $$ that I originally spent to purchase it. So that's a far cry from a GT which has an MSRP of 150K...

#2. I've had my car dyno tested, already, and the only Dyno tune that I'd ever get (should I even feel the need) would be from Lidio of Alternative Auto since he's the one who burns all the chips for the Trilogy S/Cer kits.

Yes I was joking......and if Lido was closer, I'm sure more of us New Englanders would use him.
