Removing tint on MM to pass inspection, anyone want to help

Stranger in the Black Sedan

Won't you hop inside my car?
Hey guys, I have been living in southern MD since June but the Marauder is the last of my 5 cars that I have not registered in MD because of the illegal tint. The VA inspection expires this month so it has to come off so I can get inspected in MD, and then have someone put new (also illegal) tint back on. Anywho, although I am very mechanically inclined and I also do paint and body stuff for a hobby, I have never stripped window tint before. I am especially 'scared of the defroster grid. The tint has been on the car since '04 as far as I know.

Anyone close by to me that wants to supervise? I have tint remover spray and a heat gun and razorblades. I usually dive in on projects without asking for help but this car is way too nice for me to end up screwing up the interior on soaking tint down w/ ammonia and ruining something

I have a buddy that details cars and removes tint with "ease." I will see if/when he can help you...Actually...when do you plan on doing this?

If he is reasonably priced and he won't scratch my car I can just pay him to do it and be done with it. I was going to do it this weekend because I only have a few weeks left to inspect and register before my VA sticker is going to be out of date. I have pushed this off as long as possible because I love driving my cave-car. Does your friend install tint too? I am definitely not doing the tint reinstall, I'll need someone for that too (also that won't scratch my damn car)

Other than that I have a ton of car work to do this weekend, I have to put a small block chevy I just finished into my 81 camaro, and I am freshening a forged 327 that is going into a beater fullsize truck I just bought, and... and... I have no idea when I think I am going to have time for all of this but I will sure as hell try

Check the tint law in your state, you may not need to remove the rear window tint.

WindshieldNon-reflective tint is allowed on the top 5 inches of the windshield. Front Side WindowsMust allow more than 35% of light in.Back Side WindowsMust allow more than 35% of light in.Rear WindowMust allow more than 35% of light in.

In your area, there is a Tint law on rear windows?

In OH, you can have whatever BEHIND the Driver. 50% on the front windows, and no tint on the Windshield, except for a "whatever" 5" strip at the top.

Already checked into this guys. MD allows 35% net all around. This includes the rear window. Mine measures 28. I would not be taking it off if I weren't positive it won't pass.

^^^Give it a try... I have seen cars pass with darker tint from some places that just don't care. And worst comes to worst if you fail most places will pass your for a discount if you bring it back within a certain time period.

i just had to take off my g/f's tint on her car. i can give you a hand, but im only off on wed/thurs. i actually have some spray stuff already to take off the glue from rear windows with some scrub pads. let me know if i can help you out.

if you get it inspected & they fail you, as long as you bring it back within a short period of time, they are supposed to look at it again at no charge. at least that's how it was for a couple of my cars & my brother's last 2 cars.

I know a guy who can do your inspection. Will pass you with the tint but will also inspect it just so you know if something is wrong. PM me for info :D

Md will pass u if its 28%. anything below 25-20 will not pass. mines reads 16%. just got a ticket for $50.00. going to fight it, because its a bull@#** law. DC and PG County have limo tint on some of there cars, the law goes for them 2.

35% is legal for Maryland, Because of solar tint you can only apply 50% which makes the glass 35%, I was told this by the shop that tinted my MM's windows, Mine are 20% over top the solar tint I'm driving on barrowed time, Best of luck! Seneca

i went to the MVA in glen burnie & asked a trooper when my g/f got a repair order on her car. he said it has to test 35% or higher. since the cars have "factory tint" you can raelly only put 50% and still be in compliance. are the cars you have seen with tint K-9 cars? or a specialized unit like tactical? if so, they are going to argue that tint is for keeping the dog cool. or tac will say they have specialized equipment inside or another unit may require it for surveillance. i've seen the trooper's K-9 cars with dark tint on the back area for the dog. the thing is the law can be skewed for them since they are emergency vehicles.

I can understand what u r saying. They will not pass u with the windows tinted. or some palces will. But I keep mine on and if they give me a ticket, heh, I just pay the stupid thing, tints stay on for me, ticket or no ticket!

ebxgsxr, Damien is fighting his ticket because he lives in MD...but got a ticket for "legal" tint in DC...Which I believe you can have no tint in DC...and VA has a different tint law also...He cant just change his tint as he goes from state to state...

I only think they only give tickets to locals from that state. U mean to tell me If im passin through any of these states u mention they can site me?

Just remove your front window tint for it to pass inspection, you can have the rear windows and back window tinted whatever. By just removing the front windows to pass inspection it won't cost as much to get them re-tinted after inspection.

It's actually really easy to remove tint especially if you have a hand held steamer.

YES...I dont know if its the right thing...but I drive to DC everyday...and is registered in MD. The DC police could give US tickets...and I had a few buddies go thru VA...and they make you take it OFF on the side of the road. Like I said...I dont know if the police can actually do that but...they do.

crt technically that is not correct. You can't have "anything you want" on rears. They have to be 35% net if you go by the book. The shops out here all said they will fail a car with any aftermarket film on any window including the rear glass, unless I have it certified by the state pd. And the state pd will not pass 28%.

I got pulled over in VA for tint and the cop measured it illegal but he let me go w/ no ticket, no warning, etc. Same tint I'm still wearing....

I guess taking the car to a shop that is going to be anal about stuff isn't a good idea lol.

There is a shop up here right by my work that would pass it with tint on the rear windows only.

I bought a cheap beater for my father in-law and it had 30% on all the windows, they just told me to take it off the front it would be fine.

If you have 35% tint then your metered tint would be 30-33% not 28%. Factory solar treated glass at least I know for the 04's is 95-98%.

Just try around at some other shops, you'll find one that will let it go with the rear tint.
