...rubbing noise from the back of my MM?

ok, I did a search, but didn't find much. For the last month or so I've noticed a rubbing sound at low speeds. It sounds like it's coming from something in the rear of the car.

the 'rub,rub,rub' speeds up and slows down with the speed of the car, then I can't hear it any more after about 45 mph, mostly because of engine noise.

I looked at the rear brakes. Nothing seemed out of place, in fact I was amazed how much pad I had left after 34K miles.

I'm thinking maybe warped rear rotors? I'm not sure how I can check for that in my garage.

Could it be something else though?

Check the area that the parking brake cable and the rear brake are at is closest contact, mine poped out and was rubbing on the back side of the rotor and was making a klicking sound .

great replies so far.

First, I checked the park brake. After making sure it wasn't on (even a little bit) I climbed under as far as I could. This just don't look right

It squeaked quite a bit when I grabbed a hold of it. Is that spring supposed to be all fubar looking like that? I haven't noticed any squeaks or pops, just the rubbing.

I had my tires Road Force balanced upon replacement last time, I guess it was about 12-14K miles ago. I noticed (a week or so ago) the center of my driver's side rear tire is completely bald. The other side is my polished spare I've been riding on for about 2K miles. :rolleyes: Here's a pic.

BTW,.. I checked the pressure just to be sure: 36 psi all the way around, like it should be. :confused: ...weird. They are not cuuped as near as I can tell.

I wonder if Discount Tire is open today?

Tom, have you had your rear wheel axle bearings replaced?
That sounds much like mine before JE did the rear axle update.
 
Your emergency brake cable looks just like mine, but your tires are look worse. That wub wub wub you hear that increases with the forward movment of the car until it's gone, are the "wear bars" hitting the pavement. That tire is shot, dude.
 
Ditto on the axles and bearings, mine sounded like something rubbing, pitch varried with speed. I believe mine was at about 32k miles when it showed up. It was a PITA to get a dealer to listen to me. Even with the TSB in hand when I showed up. Wasn't until it was in the shop. They were just going to do the left bearing, I had to tell them I would pay for the R&R if they didn't find anything wrong. I showed the tech. the TSB, and told him there was a kit to do both sides, 10 minutes after pulling the right shaft, the tech. comes from the parts dept with a box. Inside the box were two axles, bearings, and synth. gear lube.

I went up to Discount Tire, I'll have 2 new rears within the next day or two. They never have then in stock. :rolleyes: So, we'll see if that takes care of the rubbing noise.

I guess I'll have to head to the dealership and have them check out the axles and bearings.

Be sure you get that TSB done BEFORE the warranty expires.
 
Are you running the spare and stock size rear tires on the rear now?
If so because of the size difference the "wub wub wub" sound could be the Trac Loc clutchs slipping (and wearing).
Just a guess.

no,.. Luckily, my full size polished spare was a rear. I just bought a rim from Detroit Wheel & Tire off E-Bay, gonna put a front tire on that and keep 2 spares in the trunk. ...just cause ya never know.

I thought about U-Joints. But the noise doesn't sound right. Not to mention, I don't feel it when I put it in drive, etc.

Also, I was thinking about the possibility of warped rotors. If they were warped wouldn't I feel a pulsating when I brake? I don't feel anything in the pedal.

At this point I'm thinking might be a combination of the rear tire with the weird wear pattern and the axle & bearing TSB needing to be done.

I guess I'll try to get to the dealership this weekend.

Don't wait too long to have the axle/bearing TSB looked into; in my case it had gone to plaid and left metal (axle) filings/bits/flecks throughout the axle housing (tubes, differential, etc.). The mechanic had a heck of a time doing a clean-up. When asked about the impact to the TracLok clutches, it was noted that it would require a tear-down (and that wasn't covered), did reassure me though that it probably was NBFD.

Had to resort to ESP (with $100 deductible), since the dealership in NC wouldn't do a tear-down during the bumper-to-bumper (3year/36000miles) period; was told that it was tire / road noise, and ...besides you got ESP. :mad2:
 
I had a 2000 CV with 160K miles on the clock and thought the "Whump...Whump...Whump" noise in the rear was cupped tires so I bought all new but the noise was still there!!:mad2:

Turned ouy it was soft axles and severe bearing ruts in them.....I pulled the magnetic fill plug and it looked like a bird wing it had so much metal on it!!!:argue:

New axles, bearings and a good cleanup and she is still going strong for the second owner at about 240K miles!!!:beer:

Yup,.. 2 brand new BFG's in the back and I still have the "Whump...Whump...Whump"

I sped up to about 45 mph, rolled down the windows, turned off the tunes, and put 'er in Neutral... "Whump...Whump...Whump" 'cept a lot louder. Sounds like soft metal to metal contact all right...

I guess I better make an appointment. I just looove sitting in the dealership waiting room alllll day. :rolleyes:

Doesn't take that long (all day). Brought mine in @ 09:00 and rolled-out a little before noon; and that was with a tranmission flush to boot.
 
O.K. what is a TSB? Is this a common problem with bearings. I'm about to have my Ford mechanic pal do 410's. Should I just have this problem addressed at that time? I have an o4 with 16000 on the OD.
 
TSB= Technical Service Bulletin. It's not quite a recall,... maybe a small one that'll only get fixed if you take your car in with the correct symptoms. :P

as far as the other part of your question,.. I'll let someone who knows what the hell they are talking about answer that! :o
