Storing a MM outdoors.

Come January I will be forced to store my DTR outdoors for 7-9 months in rainy Oak Harbor, WA while I am gone on deployment. I'm probably going to be forced to store it outside along with my Jeep. What all do I need to do to store my beloved ride for so long in the elements?
 
thats going to suck. i did that with my 03 last winter. i bought a car cover, tire covers, plastic sheeting, and a tarp.
i put the wheel covers on and then the car cover.
after you put those two on i put plastic sheeting under the car and cut it to match the shape of the car but keeping the sides all longer than the actual length of the car.
wrap the plastic up around the sides of the cover and tape them or some other way attach them to the car cover.
then wrap the tarp around the entire top of the car.

this worked for me for about 6 months because i started in december and took it off in may. i had to go through feet of snow, flooding, hail and sleet. when i finally unwrapped the car i only had a few spots that were slightly damp but by then the tarp was kind of beat up. hope this helps.

And carports are not allowed in deployment parking...

i disconnected my battery but then again you might want your alarm to go off. your battery will most likely die within the first few days in not then in the first month for sure. i did that and i also put some conditioner on my seats (a little extra for the extended stay) and i also did the unbody cleaning just before with some of that sealer stuff. i cant remember what its called but it prevents rust. it was a clear spray almost looked like clear coat that could go on exhaust as well. it usually comes on new exhaust when you get it in that stuff that smells pretty bad for the first use. i also put some stuff like armor all or something on the wheels to keep them cured. i went and bought the stuff that looks like compound or some type of wheel wax and rubbed it even inside the tread to keep them moist. wax the inside of your rims to keep them from getting spotted from water that might lay on the inside. there are tons of things you could do. mainly you want to prevent water from getting to the actualy paint as much as possible.

i have my car right now inside of a stoage place even still with a cover on it. i completely agree with him but at the same time its going to cost you. i have a 10x25 unit that fits my car plus my tools, tires, spare rims and other parts perfectly. i can even go in there and work on the car with plenty of space and i pay 109 or 113 a month. they give discounts to military personnel so it may even be less. also they make exceptions for military personnel i believe they let you pay in installments once you return. id look into it before you settle on outside storage.
 
Find a storage unit or search craigslist for storage options. There has to be a little old lady somewhere around you that does not use both sides of her garage.

Find a little old lady that has a spare spot. Put a post on Craigslist, serviceman needing storage for 7 months...you'll get a response, don't give up so easy son!

Check for storage on base if you have a base hobby shop they may have a spot in the garage for storage.
 
Im on the same boat as these two, if you were in Michigan I would park you right next to mine in the garage and care for yours as i would mine. Good luck and thank you for serving, be safe. :beer:

Thanks for all the offers guys. If I could get it back home to Illinois I'd just store it in my parent's garage but I can't. I like the Craigslist idea so we'll see.

And Rawdur, I'm in the Navy. A little over 3 years now. Aviation Machinists Mate on E/A-18F Growlers.

Thats pretty sweet man. Well good luck and dont get too sea sick haha hope to be a brother in arms by the summer time. Only going reserves for now to take care of my family though but hope to be active soon enough. Hopefully youll find a good place to keep your car and just be careful with that craigslist idea, ive heard bad stories but I never have had a bad experience myself.

:flag: Thank you for your service, brown shoe. I joined the Navy to see the world. I saw it in the first 2 years. It took me another 18 to figure out how to get out. :beer:

You will be able to get reimbursed from a DD 1352-2 travel voucher after/ and during your Deployment. If you feel like doing it monthly. Just check line items on page 2 on your orders. It will specify what you are entitled. I believe that, household goods as well as vehicle storage is authorized. :cool:
