Thumping sound when tapping the brakes?

Gentlemen,


When backing out my '04 Marauder (100K original owner miles now), I've been hearing this thumping sound when I apply the brakes.

If I just tap the brake pedal enough to engage the brake lights, but not enough to engage the actual brakes, I hear this thumping noise as well.

The sound is similar to the thump that is made by the gigantic oil pump and reservoir at a Jiffy Lube or other Oil Change place.

It doesn't seem to be affecting my braking whatsoever, but the sound is troubling because I have no idea what it causing it?


I notice the sound mostly when I reverse out of my garage and begin to apply the brake. As I'm driving around town, I don't notice it nearly as much until I pull into a parking lot with my windows down, driving at a very slow speed and then applying the brakes.


It should be noted that the sound is considerably louder with the windows open (duh).


It should also be noted that the brake pads are good all around and don't need to be replaced for wear.

check the caliper bolts all the way around i have had a few back out before it will cause the issue that you are referring to... or it may be the u-joints on the drive shaft from the drive train engaging... and definatly worth a look see under the car push, pull, raise lower everything you can as far as the suspension goes as well... ball joints and bushings can cause this but with out looking or driving its hard to help any further
 
At 100K miles there are a lot of potential worn out parts. Suspension bushings are one likely source, as are the parking brake shoes. Try to get another person to recreate the noise while you search for the location.

At this age and mileage our cars are due for a full suspension rebuild.
 
The pads may have enough lining but are both sides of the rotors ok?
I just went through this - the inside surfaces of my rotors were not smooth. Never seen anything like it before but I was getting a little pulsation in the pedal and you could just start to here a "thump".
New rotors/pads and even though the caliper slider pins appeared to be free/sliding I replaced them all. The pins come w/new blots and I also replaced the rubber bellows for each. W/135K miles on my car it was cheap insurance to replace them & it turned out to be one of the better feeling pedals after new brakes!

Those pins are a much-overlooked part in a good brake job, they're what makes floating calipers float. I would replace them every time the pads are replaced. If I still had stock brakes. :D

Thank you all for the replies.


To elaborate further, I only hear the thumping when braking at VERY low speeds (idle) usually out of my driveway.

I also only hear it when tapping the brake before it actually engages - basically just letting the slack out of the pedal before it actually starts to engage the brakes.

The tapping is coming from the rear of the car and it's not coupled with any vibration (yet).


I will try replacing the parking brake shoes and go from there.


With regard to the suspension, I'm trying to milk another 10-20K miles before a full overhaul :X


Lastly, with regard to the rotors....I haven't even checked because the pads were good....oops.


I'll get back to you all and let you know what happens.
