As I learn more about the MM and modern performance cars in general, I can't help but wonder why the Marauder is such a heavy (4200 lb.) car. Especially with the small 8 cyl. aluminum block, composite or fibreglass body parts, aluminum this and aluminum that. I think some of the lead-burners from the '60s and '70s weren't that much heavier and they could almost be considered armour plated by today's standards :uzi: with mostly iron and steel construction and typically less horsepower.
My questions are:
Where is all the weight coming from?
Can we put the car on a diet? Maybe bring it down to say, 3900, or even 3800 lbs?
The floor is open...
 
some of the extra weight comes from the cushy luxury items, and extra sound deadening material.

The new items, such as the steering system and front suspension actually weigh less than what was previously used. The forged wheels weigh less than if they were cast, etc. So just think what it could be weighing in at! :eek:

as mr.rc said some is the sound insulation.

when me and my friends installed audio systems in our old cars we used
commerical stuff that would weigh in as heavy as 15 lbs for just a trunk.

having that all over the car could lead to an extra 200 lbs easy.

other then that i also wonder where all the weight is.

I have to agree with Marty the full perimeter frame ia very heavy, but that is what makes the panther platform the safest car on the road today. :up:

Yup, the body-on-frame construction, and the live rear axle both help to contribute a bit of weight to the car. Because this car is body-on-frame, it actually has "real" frame rails under the car that you can see.

Before buying my MM, I looked at the curb weight of the Lincoln LS, and was shocked to find it was only about "a person" lighter than the MM! Seems to me it was 3960 lb or something shockingly close, and yet it is shorter, less wide and unit body. Whaddya think?
 
i can one up that.

we all know what the new little eclipses look like but did you know that they
weigh in at over 4000 pounds? good god they must move like pigs with only 160 hp.

sigh, what happend to the awd turbo dsm...

Well, as some of you know, the 03/04 Cobra's are classified as a compact car to my knowledge, but they tip the scale at over 3700lbs for the coupe, and between 3900-4000lbs for the convertible! Of course, they have so much torque and power that they haul ass no matter what.

That's because the Lincoln LS has one of the most rigid and strong unibody platforms out there. To make a unibody platform that way it takes a lot of good steel, the whole car is the strength. Because of this DEW98 is one of the most expensive platform Ford builds, and has seen limited production. It is a great platform though.
The new Mustang will have a modified version of the DEW98 platform, still strong and rigid, but less expensive to build.

True, but the Cobras also have a lot of added steel to strenghten the unibody, have a cast iron block, and some say its independent rear weighs more than the live axle.
 
Think about all the safety equipment. Air bags add a lot of weight, we have them on the side as well. The crumble zones, the stearing column etc. All the motors for the windows, seats and door locks. The moon roof, trunk release, gas tank release, adjustable pedals. Many items are larger than the old days like the wheels, rotors and all the extra smog equipment.

Do you realize the newest Farrari comes in at 4100lbs
