Which States do not have smog laws?

Hello everyone,

It's been a long time since I've logged in on this site. In September of '02, I contacted Jerry Barnes about installing a Trilogy supercharger on a Marauder. I purchased an '03 new (with 450 miles on it) in May of '03. The Trilogy kit arrived in December of '03 (#12) and was installed. In Northern California (or should I say " The Peoples Socialist Republic of California"). The problem is California requires a smog certification for registration renewal, and the Trilogy kit is not CARB legal. My registration is up this May (for the 1st time since I've owned the car), and I won't be able to register it. Therefore I'm going to be forced to sell it to someone who lives in a state without that law. My question is, which states do not require a smog certification for registration, so I can advertise in those states. The car only has 1037 miles on it and has been garaged and covered (and waxed every 3 months) since I have purchased it. It's sad, but if I don't get it a good home, It'll just rot in my garage.

Iowa doesn't have it either. Then again, don't try to sell it to anyone in Iowa yet as I am hoping to have the first Trilogy MM in Iowa after this next supercharger drawing... ;)
 
Illinois rules are very strict, the ILEPA is aggressive in maintaining compliance with their program. However, their emission "standards" seem forgiving.

Sorry for your complications, but the first word in C.A.R.B. is California, and from where I sit, seems like they are the only state with such restrictions.

You should be good to go in selling the car in the remaining states, and the rest of America.
 
Transfer the title to me. How would Minnesota plates look on you MM out there in CA?

Seriously, some people I know have a mailing address in a different state, maybe a relative or close friend, to license their vehicle in that state to save on license renewals.
 
IMO move. California isn't all it's stacked up to be. Anyway their legislature has turned against the hot-rodding group that helped give CA it's legendary status.

I think CA is the only place you'll have issues with the Trilogy kit. In VA, only Northern VA has to do emissions and for newer cars it's done via an OBD-II scan. No codes, no trouble. (I assume they also do a visual check for cats, etc...)

Sorry to be so harsh about California but the difficulty of pursuing the car hobby there is enough to keep me from wanting to be there.

Especially with you in N. CA, away from L.A. where all the smog and reason for CARB really is. You'd think they'd lessen the requirements in the more rural areas...-or I should say non-L.A. areas. ;)

Virginia requires an emissions inspection every 2 years that is linked to DMV registration renewal. Just had mine done last Saturday. :D

Recently heard that mobile emissions vans are roaming the Northern Virginia area setting up checkpoints to find flagrant violators. From reading the article, it appears the technology uses Laser or IR absorption returns to a sensor on the other side of the roadway. :confused:
 
PA does not have (C.A.R.B.) but has a gas cap check and thats it....... besides if you know someone you can make anything happen.....LOL
 
Why not just pull the Super Charger off,inspect and registor the car then put all the fun back on for another 2 years?Hell your already breaking the law what's another 2 years?

Correct.

But many counties, including mine, have strict tests nearly all except early 70's and older cars must pass. It involves going to a test station and dyno / smog output tests. Fail...and no plate renewal until it passes standards.

The beauty part?
It's all done via obd2 ports and looks into the EEC.

A little programming here and there...:cool: :rolleyes:

In other words.
ALL Marauders pass around here...even if you have a TMF or MO setup.

I haven't lived in Pa. for a few years, but don't you have to get smog checked in Philadelphia and Pittsburgh? It was that way when I left.
 
MO has emissions testing, but it's weird...no probes, no EEC check. They just run you past a testing machine and that's it. Not sure how that's supposed to check anything but they charge you for it anyway.

AL and FL have no checks of any kind...good for them, far as I'm concerned. This is just one of the reasons why I'd rather be in FL...

HI doesn't have an emissions check but they do have a mandatory state safety inspection...it's a piddling nuisance. Run ya about $30 if you do it at an auto shop on one of the military bases.

Yes, I just heard about the roving sniffers in No. VA where I am. That's pretty effing lame as far as I'm concerned. I just had a terrible time getting my modded TBird SC licensed for another 2 years. I'm P.O.ed.

In Florida you can drive anything on the road! If you need to verify that, just look for the '77 Marquis Brougham with 14 mexicans in it with the tailpipe dragging, stolen tags, the baseball-sized hole in the windshield, the duct-tape landau top and the separated left front tire.
