What do you think of this BFG Tire story?

Hey guys and dolls, I hope your all enjoying your summers around this great nation..

So yesterday my 2 new rear tires arrived from the tire rack and I immediatly take them to my local tire shop to have them mounted on the car (needed them badly)

Anyways here is the deal, on the "inside of the tire" it says on the sidewall "mount this side in" and the tread groove on that side is noticeably zig zaged....... This is true on both of my old/original OEM tires as well...

Well as the guy is mounting tire #2 we notice that the zig zag groove is on the outisde, or opposite of the side of the tire that states "mount this side in"

So now I have 1 tire as original and 1 opposite......! In other words 1 side has the zig zag tread inside and 1 on the outside.

I called the tire rack and they tried to tell me this was no big deal,:bs:
I told them I would get back to them, as I wanted to run this past you all and see what you thought.........

I think something is wrong here, have any of you ever seen/heard of this before ? thanks Bill

If the tread is opposite but the "mount this side in" lettering is on the inside of both tires, the tire is made wrong.

Never heard of that one. I'd return it. Something is definitely wrong. Maybe you should contact BFG.

I would take the car back to where the tires were mounted and have them remount and balance the one that was done wrong.

Are you saying that the "Mount this Side In" notice on the tire is different for each tire? If so, it is BFG's problem. If not it is the mounting shop's problem. The tires are intended to be directional and must match with the ZigZag on the inside. Notice that the "cross" tread will angle toward the back of the vehicle. This is intended to displace water toward the rear. It doesn't work (as well) if the angle goes forward.

Find another shop ('cause the one you used is clueless) and have 'em mounted properly.

Yes this is exactly what is the case, the old tires had the zig zag on the inside, the side that says "mount inside"

The new tires have 1 that is reversed ! So the zig zag tread is on the outside on 1 of the tires, exact reverse from the other side.......

The tire shop pointing it out to me as being wrong, but they said that they had to mount them the way the tire stated due to insurance purposes........

We shall see how the tire rack handles this issue............When I called them yesterday all I got was ........:argue: So I hung up and will call back when I have more patience to listen to excuses.

I`m sure in the end it will work out

Curious...I noticed Taemian has one of his new BFG rears mounted wrong...meaning the "mount this side in" message was on the outside. I didn't think much of it at the time and thought it was a mistake. Maybe he had this issue as well?? I'll get him to respond to this thread.

This is not the case in my situation, both of mine are mounted with the "mount this side in" sides in .......The tread is backwards, i`ll be contacting BF Goodrich on this matter

There is a good chance BFG won't do a damn thing because you had the tire mounted and didn't catch it before hand.

Pictures of my messed up New tires

Many of you especially my good buddy Brian "Roylpita" have asked me to post the pictures of the tires.......

I have called The tire Rack several times and gotten nowhere it seems everyone I speak with just does`nt get it, and thinks the guy mounting the tire made the error.......Well as you all can see it`s a BF Goodrich issue...... Cheers to you all tonight:beer:

you can clearly see the blue dot, which the tire guy told me indicates outside

Man...that is just messed up. I will admit that I really liked the BFG tires when I bought the car new. They looked bitchin' and were sticky. But the center wear issues on the rears and the arrogance of the tire designers "Well, they are afterall an all season tire" cured me. If they were ever designed to handle snow....they're the worst I've ever had. Never again a BFG on my car!

Hey computertech. I have been dealing with a rep from TireRack about my shipment (which just came in today). He seemed pretty helpful. Here is his info:

Mine were improperly mounted, but the ones in his photo was improperly constructed...IF it doesn't say "Mount this side In" on the wall closest to the squiggle tread line. Don't go by only the blue dot, make sure you know what sidewall says "mount this side inside".

Guys the "mount this side inside" lettering on the side of the tires are both mounted twords the inside as they are supposed to be....

It is the zig zag tread pattern that is reversed on the one tire !

I appreciate everyones input and will be calling Gary @ the Tire Rack tomorrow, thanks again everyone

Ha thats pretty funny. I hope they take care of you. The manufacturer is responsible for tires with manufacturer's defects within the first 2/32" of tread wear, regardless of whether that tire was mounted or not. Don't give up, they HAVE to replace that tire.

Reply from Tire Rack today

Several reps have explained to you that this tire is asymmetric, not
directional and that it is designed this way. Nothing is wrong with it.
This same tire was equipped in the same tread pattern and same way from
the factory. If you do not wish to take our word for it, BFGoodrich can
confirm it for you at 800-521-9796.

Best Regards,

I ASK YOU GUYS , IF THIS WAS TRUE THEN HOW COME MY ORIGINAL TIRES WERE IDENTICAL and had the zig zag patten on the inside ???

 I particulalrly enjoyed the comment about BFG are crappy tires. I had BFGs on my 89 Grand Marquis and I hated them. They wore so awful and believe it or not it was the only thing that made me hesitate for a second before buying my new Marauder in 2004. The original BFGs wore terribly uneven. So, like a dummy, I heard about BFG # 2 and thought maybe they solved the problem. They were worse than the first set. They were so noisy the car actually vibrated and I couldn't see out of the rear view mirror sometimes because the vibration was so bad and the mrror was shaking so horribly whenever I looked in it everything behind me was a blur. The balancing and alignment were fine so that wasn't the problem. I swore never to get BFGs again and I haven't. I'm running with Good Year Eagles ultra high performance and couldn't be happier. Have 35 K on them and they are wearing even, true, and road noise is a minimum.
