Teen drivers!!!!

We're always going to have idiot drivers. Idiots texting while driving, talking on the phone, doing their make-up, eating, reading newspapers. We live in a multi-tasking society and that same society is filled with a large amount of morons, which doesn't make for a good combination.

I will say this though, I think raising the driving age to 18 can help. It's not a solution, but as an early teenager you are too easily distracted and haven't learned to respect the power you have behind the wheel. What very few teenagers realize is that a faulty decision behind the wheel can cost someone else there life. A person may never be able to emotional recover from something like that, but I know a 16 year old does not have the capability to even fathom dealing with something like that.

My Drivers Ed program was a summer program where we did do highway driving and defensive driving which greatly helped. But at 16, I don't think anyone should have a drivers license, as inconvenient as it is for adults, I think those 2 years make a huge diference in maturity and respect for others and the vehicle. Just my opinion

I remember in our drivers ed class in high school. They taught us defensive driving. We even had driving simulators that put us in situations and we would have to react to avoid an accident. They taught us about courtesy, took us on the highway and major roads. We had lots of behind the wheel time and classroom time. I remember one of our teachers was so confident in his students that some even got to practice driving the teachers Pontiac GTA Trans Am. Unfortunately for me. I was not in his class:(

I also think that so many teens see so many adults driving so bad that they too learn bad habbits just from observation.

I remember my "drivers education", there wasn't any, and anyone middle-aged or older i'm sure would agree. But....everything today is bad, you know.

Eh, I guess like Billy Joel said, "The good ol' days weren't always good and tomorrow's not as bad as it seems," but the high school in the small town just east of where I went to school was still showing them ca. 2002.

i agree with thathotrodlincn/bluerauder, posts ! i also think all new drivers go to driving school !!!! reason for this is b/c your giving someone a drivers license ,with no experience .. so they get out there, start to push/go fast /race, etc.. they do not know what to do in any of these sitations !! ralph sr./rkvette- did you guys know if you buy a new zr1 corvette , gm pays for you to go to a driving school.. my son did this at ron fellows school, near las vegas.. it does help so you know what car is going to do rather than finding out the hard way !!.

Wow! That is a good idea.

The more training the better for sure, skid school too.

NYS is getting very strict on the requirements for new drivers and how many people they can have in the car with them when they are driving. My youngest daughter will NOT be getting her license until she completes drivers ed, a seperate summer course we have to pay for, and I DEEM she is ready. I don't want a dead kid. I buried a brother, I won't be burying a child. I already did this with my other two older children. Only one accident between them, totally not at fault. As far as post #1 of this thread, yes I have seen that done and written tickets for it. Abject stupidity behind the wheel. At least one of the people I wrote LOST his license for that bone head move. Probabtion period violation. Too stupid to be driving.

My HS had drivers training and drivers ed. They also showed the carnage videos. The local Chrysler dealer, I think, donated a Dodge for training. Schools today have no budget for such items which is too bad.

My HS had riders training and riders ed. They also showed the cavalry pictures. The local livery stable, I think, donated an old hag for training. Schools today have no budget for such items which is too bad.

There fixed it for ya! :D

No, it is their age.

Kids actually lose up to several IQ points while their brains rewire themselves from childhood to adulthood, at which point we hope they regain them. It is where the "kids think they are invincible" thing comes from. The last part of their brain to develop is the part that includes the center for reason. It is also why they fail to think long term.

Granted, that is a generalization and everyone is an individual. But generally, driving skill is more about maturity than actual physical dexterity controlling the car.

In short, there are some very skilled, yet stupid drivers.

Don't blame it on their age, blame it on their skill or lack of skill as a driver.

My high school did not have a drivers ed or anything like that. However, when my Dad taught me how to drive, he was mean. So that helped a lot in me learning to drive right. And he has always been the safest driver I know. It was about driving from A to B safely and all that with him. He was a good example. And when you ran a red light or something because you weren't paying attention, he would make you feel ashamed by screaming at you so you never do it again. So I think example and good parenting has a lot to do with it.

I actually think that that mentality is why people are such terrible drivers any more. That's not saying that he was a bad one though, obviously you feel he was and those good driving habits were passed on to you.

I think that in looking at it purely as a get from point A to point B task, it removes some of the seriousness of operating a motor vehicle from peoples' minds.

I'll admit though I can offer no real alternative though, cause clearly we can see that simply telling people to take driving more seriously isn't particularly having the desired effect.

if you have the means to part it out do so. or even better if you have the means to fix it. all depends how mucht hey are offering you to buy it back. maybe post it here too, some one may wana buy it from them
