The Motor City Marauders had a very productive meeting today. We are in the process of solidifying plans for a HUGE event here in the Motor City, and would like to invite all to attend. I have discussed this idea with Steve Babcock at great length the last couple of months since our Event at Woodward this year. From the start, Steve has made it clear that he both wanted and supported the plan to host a National Marauder Meet in the Motor City, and felt the publicity would do the Marauder cause a world of good to deliver such an event here in Detroit, and make the Ford/Mercury folks take note. We got their attention last year with the 25+ Marauders we had on Woodward, media coverage by radio and television as well. Please read this carefully and objectively before passing judgement and voting.
Here is what we are planning:

Wednesday, August 17, 2005.
Marauder Dyno Day at Alternative Auto hosted by Lidio. This would include Dyno runs, Dyno tuning, and possibly minor Marauder mods set up in advance. This dyno day resulted in great results and the desire to hold at least two Marauder Dyno Days a year. Here is some info on what we did this year.

We rent the 1/4 mile track at Milan Michigan for some test and tune, and do some Marauder only Bracket Racing. This would be very simular to what was done in Indy at MVII this year. Cost will be nominal, and may be picked up by sponsors.

Ned Nuss expressed the desire to host Marauders at the Ford Proving Ground again this year. This included some tours, rides with Ford Test drivers on the test track, displays of Ford cars, included the 05 Mustang, Ford GT, supercharged Lap of America Lincoln LS, etc. This year they also offered tours of the new Rouge factory. This was one of the highest rated events the Motor City Marauders hosted this summer. Check out the links for info:

This is the big event, the big day, the Woodward Dream Cruise. I really cant say more about it than that. You either understand what its all about, the BIGGEST one day car event in the WORLD. And you will have a front row seat for you and your Marauder. We will own a restraunt's entire parking lot, and it will be ours alone, no squatters. You will be able to come and go cruising whenever you like and not loose your spot. We are trying to get Mercury or Ford to sponsor here to help out. This is where Steve Babcock says sheer numbers of people attending will help in that area. I have arranged in advance more television coverage, including the possiblity of one of the local stations broadcasting live from our display! Here are some links to our event this year:

The possibility of having a nice breakfast in the morning is easy to put together if there is interest. But I have been working on hooking up with the Michigan Chapter of the Shelby American Club (SAAC), and the Motor City Terminators (Mustang Cobra Club), and doing the open track Sessions at Michigan International Speedway again on this day. This is only in the planning stages and depends on interest. This was the other of the Motor City Marauders events that people rated the BEST event of the year. Check out the info and Pictures from this years open track event at MIS:

This is the tentative events lineup for the Week of the 2005 Woodward Dream Cruise, Steve Babcock thinks this is a great idea and has thrown his support behind it. I met with him a while ago and he thought this would make for a great Marauder Event for the Detroit area.

The question is, is this a good idea for the National Marauder Meet, MVIII. We have a large group here to do the legwork, registration, planning, and setup to make this very easy to attend and enjoy. Not only are you talking about the biggest automotive event in the world, but other great events that people have talked about and would love to attend. Hotels are nice and within easy reach, Steve from Chicago can confirm this. The Detroit area has a lot of activities for the eveings, including the Casino's, Greenfield Village, Bars, good places to dine.

We will be doing this event whether or not it is MVIII, but wanted to offer it as a choice to the membership of MM.net to attend and name it MVIII if they elect to. Just a note to Logan, a lot of the planning would be handled by my MCM members and with the help of a couple MM.net members it would no headache to you whatsoever. Any comments or suggestions would be appreciated.

Dave:

I would be interested.

The only issues that I see so far (for me) is that I believe that this event is the same weekend as the FFW at Epping, New Hampshire, and I wanted to make that event too. I suppose if I made the Motown event my summer vacation and I could do some drag racing while I am at it, I would be able to fulfill my need for speed.

Also, I would need some assistance from you or others in the Motown crew in reviewing/storing Legal Knevil which I would have shipped out in advance. I would need similar assistance after the event as well. Steve Babcock had expressed a willingness to help me with this, but he gets busy and I wouldn't want him to be my only option because of his busy schedule.

Last year I pitched in to help get donations for the goody bag. I am willing to do this again for this event. The sooner plans for this event are finalized the sooner I can get started. More lead time means a chance for more goodies.

I look forward to seeing what others have to say.

Thanks to you and the Motown crew for what has obviously been some diligent planning. You guys are amazing!

Thanks Marty,
Its been a lot of work, but in this event we would have a lot of hands here in town to get things set up. You help and support is welcome here! And I will gladly boot the Mach from the garage to store your ride in that nice new huge garage of ours!

I'll schedule my vacation

Thanks for the advance notice. Looking forward to seeing you guys again.

What a jam-packed 5-day schedule! Nice thing is, there's enough variety that if you can't make the full 5 days, there's still plenty to participate in. As was mentioned in the concurrent MVIII thread, social time is also important, especially if family members are making a vacation of the trip. I have no doubt that this will be a great event, whether it's MVIII or not.

You mentioned in Chat a tour of the Ford Rouge Plant. Is that still a possibility?

I know it's early, Dave, but the cost per Member/Family might have an impact on some attending. A parking lot was rented last year for WDC. Granted there will be more cars this year, but it's a bigger lot. Do you foresee that cost being less this time around? I know you have some irons in the fire for sponsorships.

I hope I am not stepping over my bounds here....but I believe the Buckeye contingent would be very interested in this scenario.

I was very impressed with your organization today, and the shear involvement of all your members. I am glad to be apart of it, and hope to be of any assistance in the future.

All of you seem to have done your homework, and have all the contacts in your corner to provide a very organized Mercury event.

The Rouge tour is a very real possibility! A lot of cost factors will depend on if this is the official MVIII and how we deal with our sponsors.

The dyno day is what you make it, in the links Lidio covers his dyno tuning services and costs.

Drag racing at Milan is very affordable, cost would be determined by numbers attending, but from what i understand, a weekday at milan is very very reasonable. With no sponsor help I would think $35 to $50 per drag racer, $10 for spectators. If we can get vendor support, this would be the way to go. Perhaps we could count on support from MM.net itself?

The Ford Proving Ground is a free event. Last time Ford donated tickets to the Rouge tour to those that wanted to go for free. They also provided a Sandwich making Buffett for lunch and snacks, pop as well.

The Burger King has agreed to lease us their lot. We are currently working on sponsors to help with this cost. The appeal for Ford to lend a hand here is that the Burger King buys scholarships for local needy kids for school. Steve said that would be a media event for Ford and Lincoln Mercury. Even partial sponsorship will help. Early numbers indicate that with absolutely NO sponsor help, 60 cars would cost $100 each for the dream cruise. We would expect more than that though.

Open track at MIS is not cheap. This year it cost $100 for 2 seperate sessions on the track. this was set up by the SAAC and I wont know till later if this is even a fiesable event as of yet. Best $100 you will ever spend with your clothes on!
If the open track doesnt pan out, then we do a breakfast or any number of back up ideas we are working on.

Basically the costs are for the Drag racing track rental, and the lot rental for Woodward itself. Goody bags weigh in too, but we get stuff donated for that easily. If we can lay this event right in Ford's lap during the Dream Cruise, and since it will be a photo op for them donating to a charity scholarship fund, Steve thinks that there may be something from Ford in the way of sponsorship. Its really too early to nail down everything, but I hope this gives you an idea of what we are talking about expense wise. We could talk to one of the Casinos and arrange them to provide a shuttle bus to the Casino right from our hotel! Lots of possibilities here.

Barry,

You're not overstepping any bounds in my opinion. As a Buckeye, I'm in favor of all the things you have done this year, and I'd be glad to go to MVIII in Detroit.

Dave,

Fantastic idea, I'll support what you put together. The list sounds great so far. Let me know if I can help in any way.

Count me in!! Sounds like a lot of high-speed fun! Hopefully I will have the hole in my muffler fixed by then. :banana2:

August Event

Dave,

You and the Motor City guys have done a fantastic job of planning this event! Don't care what you call it, it sounds like fun and I'm looking forward to it.

How many cars can you fit in a Burger King parking lot anyway?

They are just about ready to remodel the Burger King, we would own the entire lot, the grass in front of the lot, and the grass from the sidewalk to the street. If laid out right, we are thinking 80-85 cars, and we are working on securing more space. We also have our eye on another lot about a mile south that would accomodate more as a backup plan.

Rod, if you fly in someone will drive you around. I can pretty much guarantee it.

I was sorta kidding about John flogging the TX folks. I would rent a car, but would definately want some MM rides.
